Skill of the Week: Part 2

Live Guitar Course: Get Better as a Beginner Guitar Player

As we all progress in our guitar playing journey, moving beyond “beginner status” becomes increasingly desirable. Even when maintaining a well-rounded practice routine and trying to create opportunities to stretch and grow with other musicians, we can sometimes feel ‘stuck’ in certain areas of our playing. Part two of this course is aimed at common areas that a good number of our members have expressed they wish they could be a little better at. Each week, we’ll take a good, hard look at how to improve upon some of these key areas in guitar playing. Come expecting to look at each of these subjects a bit differently than you may have seen them in the past. If you have an open mind, and a desire to see true change and improvement, then you’ll be well on your way to graduating from that ‘beginner status’ ball and chain in these areas!

Week 1

10/25/2017 at 8pm

Switching Between Chords

No matter what skill level you find yourself at, this can be challenging. Perhaps you struggle with changing between basic open chords, or maybe you’re learning some more complicated closed voicings that are tripping you up. Either way, the techniques and mindset in this interactive hour are going to have you switching more efficiently than ever before!

Week 2

11/01/2017 at 8pm

Practicing Scale Patterns

Lead guitar is all about scales, right? You must know your scales so you can move all around the fretboard, don’t you? Yes and no. Don’t get me wrong; scales are great vehicles, but most players miss the best part of scales because they only practice them like an exercise. Scales are musical, and I’ll show you how to make music with several different sounding scales. Turning your practice routine into making music. It doesn’t get any better.

Week 3

11/08/2017 at 8pm

Fret Hand Strength, Pick Hand Importance

From barre chords, to scale drills, the fret hand can get quite tired. Have you ever wondered if the fret hand was working too hard? Maybe it is trying to do the job of more than one hand. In this lesson, we will go over some key ways to strengthen the fret hand, but we’ll also look at the roles that both hands should have in order to make sure that one hand isn’t doing more than it’s fair share.

Week 4

11/29/2017 at 8pm

Staying Relaxed While Playing

This is such an important skill, but it’s one of those annoying self-defeating issues. If you tell yourself to relax, you end up increasing your level of tension. So what’s the secret to solving this problem? We will cover it this week.

Week 5

12/06/2017 at 8pm

Training Your Ear

We can all improve our ear. In this session, we’ll discuss the single most important asset to have ingrained in your musical mind and we’ll look at many ways to put it to use. The good news is that anyone from of any skill level can accomplish all of what we’re going to cover.

Week 6

12/13/2017 at 8pm

Creating Cool Chords

Did you know that you don’t need to learn all those chord positions in that large, thick book you bought 15 years ago? You can make amazing sounding chords from shapes you already know. It’s all about knowing what is available around the chord you are playing. We’ll look at how to use scales and chords together to create some fresh sounds!

Week 7

12/20/2017 at 8pm

Creating Cool Chord Progressions

So, we’ve messed around with making some fresh chords. Now it’s time to actually use them. In this session, we’ll create cool chords using a very simple melody as the basis. We’ll talk about voice leading, and how to create positions that flow from one to the next.

Week 8

01/03/2018 at 8pm

Pick Hand Control

We’ve all felt it: something is just a little too fast or weird, and we feel our shoulder tense, and our picking gets sloppy leading to epic levels of frustration. We’ll look at 3 specific ways to gain better control of your picking and practice some insanely simple, yet useful, exercises in the process.

Week 9

01/10/2018 at 8pm

Using a Metronome

Don’t worry; we’re not going to do speed drills. We’re going to discuss how to play musically with a metronome. There are a lot of ways to treat that little constant, and how you choose to roll with it can make or break your sound as a player.

Week 10

01/17/2018 at 8pm

Creating Melody

Where do great melodies come from? Why does it seem like some people have melody oozing out of them, while others have no concept in this area whatsoever? The key to creating melody is recognizing where it starts: in the musical mind. Noodling on the guitar can help you make sense of something that started in your head, but many times, our guitars actually get in the way of writing great melodies. We’ll discuss this and more in the live, interactive session.
