Date Topic

Week 1

01/23/2019 at 6pm

Chord Harmony Review and Basics

Let’s take a look at the major scale from a chord harmony perspective. You’ll learn common practices for creating chord progressions that exist strictly within the major scale. We’ll also experiment with some creative ways to break the rules, being the renegades that we are.

Week 2

01/30/2019 at 6pm

Four Note Harmony and the Major Scale

Building on week one, we will add a note to each chord present in the major scale. In other words, we’ll stack one more 3rd on top of our scale degree triads. This creates some jazzy and moody sounds when used only on the chords, but sounds especially good when we start working with progressions.

Week 3

02/06/2019 at 6pm

Creating Sus Chords

What is a “sus” chord and how can they be used? You will have complete understanding of this by the end of the session. Some of the more common approaches can be used in less common ways to create unique sounds.

Week 4

02/13/2019 at 6pm

Using Sus Chords and Cadences

It’s time to use sus chords to help us transition from chord to chord. At first we’ll adhere to the rules of the major scale, though eventually we’ll break those rules completely and demonstrate how to still sound great.

Week 5

02/20/2019 at 6pm

Defining and Creating Add Chords

“Add” chords are commonly known as the widest sounding and most versatile of all extension chords, and in this session you’ll learn how to create and incorporate them into your own playing.

Week 6

03/20/2019 at 6pm

The Beauty of Incomplete Chords

Incomplete chords can be thought of as ‘roomy’ chords, as they provide room for other textures and tones. We look at what qualifies as an incomplete chord and experiment with ways to arrange our fingers for fresh sounds without an excess of finger gymnastics.

Week 7

03/27/2019 at 6pm

Dominant Chords and Roles

We all know and love dominant chords, especially in the blues, but there are other strategic and interesting ways these chords can be inserted into chord progressions. We’ll start with the major scale and then move on to more eclectic variations.

Week 8

04/10/2019 at 6pm

Altered Chords and Their Uses

Altered chords can really spice things up when used strategically. Learn how to use them as substitutions for standard sounds, then explore how they can create natural key changes..

Week 9

04/17/2019 at 6pm

Diatonic Progression Showcase

This week, we get to build three progressions that adhere strictly to major scale rules. We’ll incorporate all of the flavors of chords we’ve been studying and take each progression beyond the basics, looking at ways to phrase and arrange with voice leading and quality riffs in mind.

Week 10

04/24/2019 at 6pm

Blues and Non-Diatonic Progression Showcase

We will build on last week by intentionally breaking a host of rules and relying first and foremost on the ear. This final session will be a great time, as there’s little on the instrument that is more entertaining than intentionally breaking the rules we’ve worked so diligently to establish.
