Date Topic

Week 1

04/28/2020 at 8pm

Right and Left Hands

You’ve got two hands and neither is more important than the other when it comes to playing the guitar. This week we’ll take on some exercises that will address both separately and later in this course, we’ll take the time to sync them up.

Week 2

05/05/2020 at 8pm

Hammer Ons and Pull Offs

Hammer ons and pull offs are definitely essential when it comes to phrasing on the guitar, but often players don’t get their fingers to fire accurately. In this lesson, we’ll take the time to fix that once and for all...and you’ll soon start to realize that they’re a good work out too!

Week 3

05/12/2020 at 8pm

Known as the guitar player’s “fingerprint”, vibrato is so important when it comes to sounding like a great guitar player because ultimately it’s your goal to sound like a great vocalist. This week, we’ll take the time to practice a couple different types of vibrato because honestly, how many of you sit down and do that?

Week 4

05/19/2020 at 8pm

Sliding Fundamentals

Not only is sliding a fun winter pastime, but it’s also a key element in phrasing when it comes to the guitar. In week 4 of Practicing Fundamentals, we’ll take on sliding as its own endeavor, but then start to mix and match it with some of the things we’ve covered up to this point in the course as well.

Week 5

05/26/2020 at 8pm

Bending Fundamentals

Accurate bending takes strength and patience (which is just another form of strength if you think about it). Although we won’t go overboard with it this week, we’ll not only make sure the most important bends are accurate, but we’ll also start to combine them with other concepts in this course to really help to start to develop your phrasing ability.

Week 6

06/09/2020 at 8pm

Timing and Groove

You can play a wrong note or two and other players might not mind, but if you’re timing sucks, nobody’s going to want to play with you. In week 6 of Practicing Fundamentals, we’re going to get real cozy with your new best friend, the metronome as we address beat placement, swing and getting that 2 + 4 to breathe.

Week 7

06/16/2020 at 8pm

Alternate Picking Vs. Economy Picking

A lot of players out there kind of just do what they got to do in order to play something, but consistency is the key to accuracy. In this lesson, we’ll discuss what alternate and economy picking are, the pros and cons and ways to practice both, so hopefully your right hand goes from chaos to so confident that it just goes on autopilot.

Week 8

06/30/2020 at 8pm

Strumming and Reading Rhythms

There is logic to strumming and it’s based on rhythms. Understanding this and practicing both will undoubtedly make you a better player. This week we’ll demystify both so that not only will your right hand be more accurate, but hopefully you’ll begin to understand how to speak in rhythms as well because after all, this is a language that we’re dealing with.

Week 9

07/07/2020 at 8pm

'Hey', 'Hello' and 'Yo, what’s up?' are all greetings. They all serve the same purpose but depending on the social setting, you might strategically pick one over the other. This same concept applies to music by using subtle alterations in how you approach notes that can make all the difference. In today’s lesson, we’ll recap how basically all of the things we’ve been talking about so far can help you construct the perfect phrase and we’ll apply those concepts to some pretty bland phrases in order to spice them up!

Week 10

07/14/2020 at 8pm

Let’s say there’s two ways to clean your room. One takes 30 minutes and the other takes two hours and doesn’t get it as clean as the 30 minute procedure. Which method are you going to opt for? Yeah, that’s what I thought. Efficiency is everything when it comes to practicing whether it’s right then and there as you sit down or whether you’re trying to plan out your schedule for the week. In our final lesson, we’ll talk about how to practice including learning a passage as well as creating a sample practice routine of things to work on from this course before we actually sit down and practice it together.
