Expression Techniques for Guitar

Live Guitar Course: Come explore the most essential expression techniques of the guitar with Irene Ketikidi.

Bending, vibrato, slide, hammer on, muting, harmonics and volume swells are some of the amazing techniques we can use on the guitar to produce beautiful sounds. Let’s not forget that our fretboard has a very similar range to a vocalist, so essentially what we want to do is “sing” on our guitars with our fingers. Join Irene Ketikidi for the 10 week course, exploring the various facets of expression techniques on your guitar!

Date Topic

Week 1

01/06/2021 at 3pm

Expressive Vibrato

Perhaps the most important trait in one’s playing, vibrato can be fast or slow, mellow or aggressive, ranging anywhere between a quarter tone up to a whole tone or even wider – depending on the style and expression you’re after.

Week 2

01/13/2021 at 3pm

Slides have a beautiful vocal sound quality and feel. They are an invaluable tool for creating melodies, adding groove to a rhythm part, and giving an overall flow to your playing.

Week 3

01/20/2021 at 3pm

Bending Part 1

Bending is the most popular expression technique and is essential in guitar solos and improvisation. This week we’ll look at semitone, whole tone and one and a half tone bends, and how to use them in context.

Week 4

01/27/2021 at 3pm

Bending Part 2

In part two of bending, we’ll look at how to expand our expression palette to include pre-bends and combine all bend types with vibrato and slide.

Week 5

02/03/2021 at 3pm

Hammer On!

The most intuitive thing to do on guitar is use our pick to produce notes. While this is a great tool, you’ll find that hammer-on and pull-off techniques can provide a great deal of dynamic variation and expression.

Week 6

02/10/2021 at 3pm

Another cool thing about the guitar is that it allows us to create sparkling harmonics that emulate the sound of a harp. In this lesson, we’ll find all the natural harmonics that can be produced on the guitar neck, as well as learn how to play artificial and tapped harmonics.

Week 7

02/17/2021 at 3pm

A great way to add another layer to your phrasing is palm muting. Although it’s mostly been associated with rock, it is very common in pop melodic lines and percussive riffs.

Week 8

02/24/2021 at 3pm

Finger tapping has a very fluid sound that allows you to play fast piano-like runs, add unexpected intervals to a melody and create interesting rhythm parts.

Week 9

03/03/2021 at 3pm

Trills and Tremolo Picking

During the last two lessons, we’ll be covering a variety of expression techniques. This week, we’ll work on trills and tremolo picking which have their roots in classical instruments.

Week 10

03/10/2021 at 3pm

Volume Swells and Rakes

Closing this course, we’ll emulate violin swells using the volume knob on our guitar and see how a pick or finger plucked rake can add to our dynamics and expression.
