Basic Blues Review

If you are brand new to blues guitar or a seasoned veteran who needs a refresher, this is the lesson for you. In this lesson we will be discussing the basic blues form, basic chord voicings, comping rhythms, basic blues soloing/phrasing and some killer blues licks!

Quick Change Blues

We are going to cover the most common variation of the basic blues form, the quick change blues. You will learn some more advanced chord voicings and how they relate to the quick change blues, blues comping, and some licks that cover the quick changes in quick change blues.

Minor Blues

Now that we have covered some common major style blues forms, we are diving into the murky waters of minor blues. In this lesson we are going to cover the minor blues chord voicings, a “Thrill is Gone” style turnaround, minor blues licks, and licks over the turnaround.

1-4-1-5 Slow Blues Turnaround

We will discuss the common turnaround on a slow major blues in this lesson. You will learn this turnaround, good chord voicings to use, and some licks to play over this turnaround.

The Sharp 4 Diminished in Blues

In this lesson we are talking about the most common ways to use diminished chords and scales in the blues. We will cover diminished chords, diminished arpeggios, how diminished chords work in the blues, and how to use this concept to launch you back to the one chord in your solos, even if the band doesn’t do it!

The 2-5 Turnaround

The 2-5 turnaround is essential to know if you want to venture into the jazzier side of blues. But don’t worry, the 2-5 turnaround is simple and fun to play over. In this lesson we will be talking about 2-5 chord voicing, the basic formula for 2-5 licks, and a few killer licks to get you started. This lesson includes tabs for all the examples and a blues jam track featuring the 2-5 turnaround.

Other Uses for the 2-5 Progression

Now that we have learned the 2-5 turnaround, we can start using the 2-5 turnaround in other parts of the tune. The most common use of a 2-5 is to go to the 4 chord in the blues. In this lesson we are going to discuss chord voicings, a few licks, and how to do this concept as a way to launch us into the 4 chord, even if the band doesn’t do it!

Altered/Diminished in 4th Bar

In this lesson we are taking a look at how to use the altered scale and the diminished scale in the blues. This is a concept that Robben Ford made popular. We will discuss the altered and diminished scales, where to play it in the blues, chord voicings for this concept, and how to use these scales to spice up our 2-5 licks. This lesson includes tabs for all the examples and a blues jam track.

Gospel Blues

We will be talking about Gospel Blues and how it incorporates most of the concepts previously discussed. We’ll cover the form of gospel blues, how all these concepts work together, as well as some licks over the form. This lesson includes tabs for all the examples and a gospel blues jam track.

8 Bar Blues

The 8 bar blues we will be covering shares concepts with the gospel style blues in the previous lesson. Learning to navigate odd forms like this is very crucial for the modern blues player. We will discuss the form, chord voicings, and a few licks. This lesson includes tabs for all the examples and a 8 bar blues jam track.
