Week 1

01/06/2016 at 8pm

Get Acquainted, Start Making Music

Player, meet your guitar. Guitar, meet your player. We will go over how both acoustic and electric guitars work, basic ways to care for your instrument and get the guitar your hands. By the end of this session, believe it or not, you will actually be playing a little something simple! Have an electric guitar tuner, a pick, your guitar and and armless chair ready to go for this lesson.

Week 2

01/13/2016 at 7pm

You Are Free to Play

You get to learn and strum your first chord! You will also get to learn a way of making the chord sound musical and song like. We’ll discuss proper hand positioning and ways to build strength with your fretting hand and we’ll look at the VERY beginnings of strumming. Don’t stop practicing last week’s material, but with this new chord and the provided play-along music, you should have some of your very own playing stuck in your head already

Week 3

01/20/2016 at 7pm

Change Is Good

This week, we will learn the A chord. Keeping it slow and chill, we’ll look at tips on changing between chords and memory tricks to help your mind and muscles remember things quickly and efficiently. We’re going to up the game just a bit on our strumming as well.

Week 4

01/27/2016 at 7pm

We get to throw the E chord into the mix and look at how it interacts with the A and D chords. You’ll be surprised at how much you can accomplish with just three chords when it comes to learning and playing songs. You’ll get to play over a new track as well!

Week 5

02/03/2016 at 7pm

Rhythm and Rhythm

This week, we’ll focus completely on strumming technique, and learning how to interpret basic written strum patterns. You’ll get to practice your chord transitions more and we’ll start looking at and ‘feeling’ different rhythmic values. (A fancy way of saying “different strums”) After this session, you’ll see how knowing just five weeks of information and regularly practicing it can go a long way in making you feel like you’re already a “real” guitar player!

Week 6

02/10/2016 at 7pm

Open Up Your Eyes

We’re going to start working on some simple melodies to go with your chords in the coming weeks and there needs to be a system for communicating how to play these melodies. In this lesson, you’ll learn the basics of reading TAB musical notation. Don’t worry. You won’t be flooded with tons of information. We’ll keep it simple and only let you in on what you need for right now!

Week 7

02/17/2016 at 7pm

All About The Melody

Using what we learned in the previous two sessions, we’re going to work on a melody to play over “A Perfect Day”. You’ve already been strumming along with this track and it will be a nice next step to provide a simple melody guitar to work with something you are already familiar with. We’ll go over some picking technique also.

Week 8

02/24/2016 at 7pm

Rounding It All Out

There are five basic major chord shapes on the guitar. So far, we have learned three of them. We’ll tackle the other two in this session and put them to good use! The C and the G chords add to our existing A, D, and E chords. Just remember: CAGED. Since you’ve already learned a few chords, you now know HOW to learn and practice chords. We’ll discuss them a little and then look at using them in a musical example.

Week 9

03/02/2016 at 7pm

Playing Along

Learn and play a simple melody over “Gone To See”. This time around, you’ll be able to see a clearer relationship between the chords of the song and the notes you are playing in the melody. This relationship will become ever more clear as you progress in your guitar journey.

Week 10

03/09/2016 at 7pm

Lead The Way

Now, after only ten weeks, you’ll get a chance to move around the neck a little bit. Don’t be afraid. It’s not so bad! We’ll be in the key of G, playing over a familiar track and looking at a few new technique basics. Come on in, the water’s fine!
